When I started covering automation and robotics in the early 1990s, I heard from a few experienced editors in the field that, unfortunately, I had missed the heyday of robotics. According to them, industrial robotics peaked in the 1980s, with robotic sales dwindling in the early 1990s as industry—mostly automotive manufacturers—had installed about all the robots they were going to buy. Needless to say, such comments were extremely shortsighted. I would say that, even as advanced as robotic technologies appear today, we’re only seeing the beginnings of their potential in industry and elsewhere.
